Student well-being below average (Student Living Monitor): these are the causes

The "Student Living Monitor European Research Report 2023" is a comprehensive study that focuses on the influence of the living environment on the well-being and happiness of students in Europe. The report is a collaboration between several organisations including the Erasmus Student Network and the Class Foundation. It includes data from 3,364 respondents from 40 European countries. The results indicate that respondents' mental health scores are on average lower than the benchmark, indicating challenges in their mental well-being.

The study highlights four key areas:

Availability and choice

The opportunity for students to choose from various types of accommodation improves their well-being.

Commitment to well-being

Active participation in community events and access to facilities such as gyms increase mental health.

Inclusive community

An inclusive environment particularly supports non-traditional students, such as those with disabilities or non-binary gender identities.

Targeted support

Mental health-focused services are perceived as valuable, especially by students struggling with mental health problems.

More challenges

It further highlights the specific challenges students experience such as loneliness, financial concerns, and the difficulty of finding suitable housing. The report includes country-specific data demonstrating the varying impact of housing conditions in different European countries.

The aim of the study is to give policymakers and housing providers insight into how students' living experience can be improved to promote their well-being and mental health.
